Subtle Signs That Your Marriage Might Be Over

Divorce is a rough road for many people. Most people wouldn't want to be surprised by a divorce, so it is important to pay attention to the health of your marriage.

Some people might think that constant fighting is the only sign that a marriage is going to end. This isn't the case. Here are some signs that science notes might signal that a divorce is on the horizon:

You apologize for the marriage

People who speak negatively of their marriage are more likely to divorce. Spouses who act as totally different entities and express disappointment in the characteristics of the marriage are probably going to see their marriage end. One study, which was published in the Journal of Family Psychology in 2000 found that these points, and similar ones, could predict the strength of the marriage.

Your husband's job

Men who don't work full-time are more likely to divorce. A study that was published in the American Sociological Review found that when husbands didn't work full-time, there was a 3.3 percent chance that the marriage would end the following year. The rate for marriages in which the husband worked full-time was only 2.5 percent. Interestingly, the wife's employment status didn't have the same impact.

Your attitude toward your husband

If you have the wrong attitude toward your husband, it might mean that your marriage is very weak. The founder of the Gottman Institute notes that criticism, contempt, stonewalling and defensiveness are bad omens for the marriage.

Running away from conflict

How you handle conflict might be a sign of the fate of your relationship. If you or your husband runs when there is a conflict instead of trying to work things out civilly, there is a good chance that your marriage isn't going to last. Around 350 newlyweds in Michigan were interviewed for a study that was published in the Journal of Marriage and Family in 2013. It found that divorce rates are higher when the husband withdraws during conflicts.

If you don't think that your marriage is going to last, you can start practical planning for the divorce. Things like gathering copies of financial statements can be beneficial if you decide to file or if your husband springs a divorce on you. When a divorce does occur, advanced planning can help you in the process since you will have many of things you need to make your case in court.
